Pont-Viau

Pont-Viau is a neighbourhood in the city of Laval, Quebec. It is bounded on the southeast by the Rivière des Prairies, on the northeast by Duvernay, on the northwest by Vimont and on the southwest by Laval-des-Rapides.

The district owes its name to the bridge that crosses the Rivière des Prairies at the height of the district. The name of the bridge comes from the first occupant of the land that forms the district, Christophe Veau, but a spelling error in the transcription of the records changed the family name to Viau. This is why the bridge (Pont Viau) and the neighbourhood (Pont-Viau) still bear the name Viau. The first Catholic parish in the neighbourhood was also named Saint-Christophe, in honour of this pioneer, but the church was converted into a residence for the elderly.
